Village Garden, Wiltshire
The site is a long narrow space and the client wanted to create a garden with distinct areas including outside eating space, space for her grandchildren to play in and a vegetable garden.
The first half of the garden comprises a paved seating area by the house, surrounded with wide beds filled with shrubs and tall perennials to create a feeling of intimacy and seclusion. Square beds lead one down the lawn to the second part of the garden. This is the more functional part of the garden, where the green house and vegetable garden is located. However, because of the orientation of the garden a second terrace was created in this area to provide a sun trap. Because this area is also used for relaxing and entertaining, the vegetable garden couldn’t just be purely practical, it needed to be ornamental and pleasing to look at as well, so vegetables were inter-planted with roses and perennials. A series of espaliered fruit trees provided both screening and were a useful, space saving way of growing a variety of fruit.
